Serious thoughts on CB
(03-27-2008)

I was one of those lucky few that got into the 2moons CB quite early on. In those early days of beta testing, there was a genuine enthusiasm and willingness by the player base to explore and reflect upon the full potential of this game. Most players were fulyl aware their status as CB testers and went out of the way to test the full breadth of gameplay features for bugs and suggetion. Many players often gathered in towns to discuss how the game could be improved for both the players and Acclaim, there was s general concensus that this game had a great potential as was promised. However in a matter of weeks, this overwhelming atmosphere of optimism has withered away not very disimilar to the numerous Korean f2p MMORPG flops flooding todays market. In my view, several key factors are responsible for this downward spiral of community standards and a general feeling of blase towards game testing.

1). Too many players are playing the game like its in OB

This point is rather self-explantory. The CB has been turned into another game of pure grind and gear. Most people are negelecting their responsibilities as CB testers and solely concerned about reaching the highest level and gaining the best gear. The Closed-Beta forum should be over-flowing with player discussions about the core gameplay and suggestions by players for game improvement. But instead, the forum is nearly dead and are mainly filled with threads such as "Whats the best build fo Summoners. Clearly alot of people are far more concerned with wooping the shits of other players in PvP combat than actually testing the game for bugs.

Alot players use the argument that this is only CB, therefore all my +9 gear and unlimited DIL will be wipe". I find this argument highly hypocritical. If the person really does back up what he is saying, then he/she should get rid of all his +9 and give away all his DIL, since after all this is CB and these in game items mean little.

2). A lack of planned stages for CB.

Most MMORPG CBs are divided into clear stages with each stage designed to test specific aspects of the game. This not only ensures that theres is a clear aim to the CB, but also makes players fully aware of their responsibilities and duties as Beta-Testers. In the current stage, no one is exactly sure of what their role is.

We are here to test bugs and make suggestions, yet there seems to be no response from Acclaim, whether the suggestions are being taken on board on the bugs are in a state of being fixed. Theres no patching and no word from the staff. This leads to my first point, most people are left with the only alternative of just playing the game, and the result is an over-emphasis on the grind and gear factor and creating an atmopshere indusive for players to exploit the game to give themselves an advantage over other players (duping).

3). Too many players.

25,000 players for the very first phase of CB is quite alot. The more people the less it is to manage, and furthermore, many players are less than adequete in their English speaking skills. How can these people effectively communicate their suggetsions and report bugs to the Acclaim staff. With a smaller player base the community becomes tight more opportunities are available for open dialogue and player discussion, as well as enabling the Acclaim to recieve a clear and accurate response to the state of the game.

However it seems as several people has already pointed out, that the client is the translated Dekraon client from one year ago and the purpose the CB is to get a general idea of player feedback (thus the survey) for which the Acclaim team could use to make improvements to the game. If thsi is the case, and it certainly seems to be, then this game is at least 1 year away from going into official release.

4). Lack of communication between the Acclaim team and CB testers

Many people have already pointed this out. What we would like to see is the game devleoping team communicatiing with the testers. We would like to have some idea of what is currently happening, what is being implemented, worked on, completed etc etc. Where the game is going, what features are in the planning phase what aspects of the game are being changed in accordance to the player suggestions and so forth. We want to see that our efforts are having realistic consequences and that our opinions are being heard. Currently it seems that all the Polls, the suggestions, the errors are going on deaf ears.

I would like to point to games such as Vanguard and Eve, where the developers keep a blog and keep testers updated on what is happening. And the result is that an atrocious ntial CB is turned into a great OB and release through the joint efforts of players and developers.

Im sure almost everyone here would very much like to see Acclaim doing well and this game becoming the best f2p MMORPG. In fact alot of people are digging Acclaim and DP for what they have already achieved. But at the same time, a lot of us are utterly frustrated by the lack of communication between the staff and the players and are deeply concerned with a lack of direction with the current state of CB.
